Admittedly limited appeal, but fans of absurd "humor" will enjoy it

The first time I attempted to watch "Greaser's Palace", I turned it off. I'm not exactly sure why, but maybe the absurdest humor was just a bit too low key for my taste. Recently (roughly four years later), I decided to give it another go. Its one strange film (among the most bizarre produced in the States) and obviously a film of limited appeal. However, for fans of low key absurdest humor or the brief and bizarre vogue of acid westerns in the 70s, this is certainly worthwhile. For a film so arty and bizarre, its pretty entertaining. Like the finest surrealist comedies, the jokes are hilarious because they often seem to lack a punchline.

In my mind, this is Robert Downey Jr's most successful film. "Putney Swope" was funnier, but it hasn't aged well and was pretty uneven. On the other hand, "Greasers Palace" is a more cohesive work. It has a relatively linear (if completely bizarre) storyline that operates on its own inner logic. The lack of explanations or origins for the characters and events just give the film a dreamlike flow.

The characters and situations are memorably offbeat. The Christ character of this parable wears a zoot suit who lands in a western town from a parachute (love the occasional anachronisms). There's also a homosexual midget who keeps getting killed and than returning to life to describe his vision of Heaven ("I was swimming in a rainbow with millions of babies... and they was naked... and then all of the sudden I turned into a perfect smile!"). Not to mention a pre-"Mickey" Toni Basil as a topless dancer. I also appreciated seeing the underrated and talented Luana Anders. "Greaser's Palace" doesn't really have a lot of depth behind its allegory, but its quite entertaining for fans of surrealist dry humor. (7/10)
