Review :

So routine

Having seen Lautner's best known gangster flick Les tontons flingueurs, I knew pretty much what to expect from this. A lot of talk about values among criminals, allied to some pretty effective hold-up and getaway scenes. Certainly the first heist goes off well; the cops are taken out and the loot is snatched with ease.

Unfortunately, it's all downhill after the first ten minutes. As soon as Jean Gabin waddles onto the set, and starts to deliver his lines in a rapid monotone as if distancing himself from the proceedings, we have a routine crime picture in which the dots only have to be connected to get to the final scene. Dany Carrel plays the sexpot; she's got a terrible haircut and cannot act. There's an hilarious scene in a hippy club, with some terrible jazz ballet dancing, that has to be seen to be believed.

Serge Gainsbourg, still a decade away from the chubby fool singing bad rap songs that he became, has a wonderfully galvanizing few moments in a recording studio. I hoped that he would become a major figure in the picture, but no luck.
